Welcome to Jersey City

New to Jersey City? Allow us to give you a bit of an introduction—with an eye to the past and the present. Residents of MRK can look forward to becoming a part of this vital cultural hub, rich with a history that's reflected in its institutions and landmarks.

Jersey City Then

The seed of modern-day Jersey City was planted on Aug. 19, 1779. That's when Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee stormed British fortifications here, and the city's postcolonial era had begun. These days, you can raise a glass to Harry in the Light Horse Tavern, one of many excellent bars local to MRK.

In the early 19th century—with the help of a certain Alexander Hamilton—the city squares and streets began to take shape, and in 1820, Jersey City was officially named. That same year, William Colgate moved his soap and perfumery works to the town. Colgate became a huge industrial employer, one of many in the area. The highly evocative Colgate Clock still glows over the Hudson every night.

The Jersey City Ferry had operated in one form or another since 1764, and in 1812, it became a steam service—the journey to Manhattan reduced to a zippy 14 minutes. A few decades on, railroads were making their mark; three passenger railroad terminals were running by the dawn of the 20th century. The Downtown Hudson Tubes opened in 1909, linking Jersey City to Manhattan by rail. The system is still in use—the tunnels carry PATH trains beneath the Hudson—and is particularly convenient for MRK residents who commute or want to paint Manhattan red on a regular basis.

Jersey City Today

Fast forward to today, and Jersey City is a hub of culture, innovation, and energy. The place sizzles with galleries, like Mana Contemporary; cocktail bars, like South House; restaurants, like Cellar 335; theaters, like Loew's Jersey Theater; and green spaces, including the sprawling Liberty State Park with its two-story Sail of Columbus monument.

These days, Jersey City is a unique and much-coveted location for living, working, and entertainment. Residents of the luxury rental apartments at MRK will find themselves in a one-of-a-kind place that offers everything you need to live, work, and play in style and comfort.
